What Happens During a Multi-Stage Oxidation Removal?

1. Wash and decontaminate the surface

Every restoration starts with a thorough wash and decontamination. The crew strips off dirt, old wax, and loose chalk, then treats the mineral spotting and the waterline ring with a marine-safe cleaner.

2. Cut through the oxidized layer with compound

Compounding is the stage that actually removes the oxidation. With a machine polisher and a marine cutting compound, we take off the dead, chalked top layer of gelcoat in controlled passes, erasing the worn-out skin to reach the sound, colored gelcoat underneath.

3. Refine the gloss with polish

With the oxidation cut away, we refine the finish with progressively finer polish. This is the stage where a tired hull starts to look wet again and reflects the sky instead of swallowing the light.

4. Seal and protect the corrected surface

Freshly polished gelcoat is porous and starts oxidizing again the moment the sun hits it. We seal the corrected surface with a marine ceramic coating or a quality wax so the gloss lasts and the next round of minerals rinses off instead of etching in. Correction and protection are one job, not two.

Oxidation removal works when there is enough sound gelcoat left under the chalk to polish back to a shine. How Do You Keep the Chalk and Spots From Coming Back?

  • Put a sacrificial layer between the sun and the gelcoat with a marine ceramic coating or a quality wax or sealant.
  • Rinse the hull with clean water after every outing, before reservoir water and its minerals have a chance to dry on.
  • Dry the hull with a chamois or microfiber towel instead of letting it air dry.
  • Keep up a regular wash and wax so the protective layer stays fresh.
  • Store the boat out of direct sun or under a cover when parked.
