You spot a web of fine lines in the gelcoat, or a crack fanning out from a cleat, and the question is immediate: is this just cosmetic, or is my boat coming apart? Most cracks on a fiberglass hull are harmless. A few are early warnings of a real structural problem. Telling them apart is the difference between a quick touch-up and a repair that keeps getting bigger.
This article is a diagnostic guide, not a repair manual. We will walk through the common crack types, the warning signs that a crack has gone past the surface, and a handful of simple checks you can run while the boat sits on the trailer. A fiberglass hull is built in layers. The outer skin is gelcoat, a thin pigmented resin coat measured in thousandths of an inch. It gives the boat its shine and color, but it carries almost none of the load. Under it sits the laminate, the woven fiberglass and resin that actually holds the boat's shape and strength.
A spider crack, also called crazing, lives only in that gelcoat layer. Gelcoat is harder and more brittle than the laminate beneath it, so it cracks first when the hull flexes, gets bumped, or ages in the sun. A structural crack is different. It runs down into the laminate itself, which means the load-bearing part of the hull has been stressed or broken, not just the shell over it.
That is why the same-looking line can mean two very different things. One is a finish problem you can address with gel coat repair and a color match. The other is a strength problem that has to be diagnosed and rebuilt from the laminate out.
A crack that stays put and only marks the surface is usually cosmetic. The signs below suggest the damage has reached the laminate, which moves it from a finish fix into structural fiberglass repair.
A fine web or a starburst of shallow lines is almost always cosmetic crazing. A single crack radiating from a cleat or screw is a stress crack. Lines that fan out from one dented center point came from an impact. Long, straight cracks that follow a seam or a stringer are the ones worth a closer look.
With the boat supported on the trailer, press firmly with your palm on both sides of the crack. A solid hull barely moves and feels stiff. If the panel flexes, oil-cans, or you hear a dull thud or crackle, the laminate under the gelcoat may be compromised.
Run a fingernail slowly across the crack. Cosmetic crazing is smooth, and your nail glides over it without catching. If your nail drops into the line or snags on a raised edge, the crack has opened through the gelcoat and into the material below.
Check the crack after the boat has been out of the water for a day. Brown or gray staining, a damp halo, or beads of water seeping out all mean moisture is getting into the laminate. That water freezes and expands in a Colorado cold snap, which pries the crack wider over time.
Water that seeps into a crack expands as it freezes. On the Front Range, a boat can swing through freezing and thawing many times between fall and spring. Each cycle wedges the crack a little wider and pushes moisture deeper into the laminate.
Colorado boats live on trailers and cover real distance to reach the water. Every mile of washboard road and every bump loads and flexes the hull. That constant vibration works a stress crack the way bending a paperclip does.
