What to Do After a Ground Strike on a Front Range Reservoir

You just felt the hull shudder as it dragged over a rock, a submerged stump, or a gravel bar on a Colorado reservoir. The boat still floats and still runs, so it is tempting to shrug it off and finish the day. The trouble is that grounding damage is often below the waterline and out of sight, and a scrape that looks minor on the surface can sit right on top of a real structural crack.

This guide walks through what a ground strike does to a fiberglass hull, how to check the boat yourself once it is back on the trailer, and the warning signs that mean you should stop launching and get a professional look. Caught early, a gouge or crack is a straightforward fiberglass hull repair. Left alone to let water in, the same damage spreads and gets far more expensive to fix.

Why are groundings more common on Colorado reservoirs right now?

Colorado is in one of its driest stretches in years. Many reservoirs are drawn down well below full pool. Low water quietly changes the map you thought you knew — rocks, old road beds, stumps, and gravel shoals that used to sit ten feet under your keel can end up just below the surface or barely awash. Places like Horsetooth, Carter Lake, Boyd Lake, Chatfield, Cherry Creek, and Lake Pueblo all have rocky or variable bottoms.

What does a ground strike actually do to a fiberglass hull?

A fiberglass hull is a layered structure. There is a thin outer skin of gel coat over layers of fiberglass and resin, called the laminate, and those layers are what give the boat its strength. When you strike a rock or a shoal, the impact drives energy into all of those layers at once. The visible mark and the real damage do not always line up — a short scrape can sit over a much longer crack, and a hull can look fine from three feet away while quietly taking on water through a breach you cannot see.

What types of hull damage should you look for after running aground?

  • Gel coat gouges and scrapes: the outer coating is ground or chipped away, exposing the fiberglass beneath.
  • Spider and stress cracks: fine, hairline cracks that spider out from an impact point, signaling that the laminate underneath flexed hard.
  • Deeper laminate fractures: cracks that pass through the gel coat into the fiberglass itself — structural, not cosmetic.
  • Keel and strake damage: the keel line and the running strakes take the first hit.
  • Transom or stringer stress: cracks at the transom corners or along the inner stringers mean the frame took the shock.
  • Water intrusion through a breach: any crack or puncture that reaches the laminate can let water soak into the fiberglass.

How do you check the hull safely on the trailer after haul-out?

1. Do a close visual pass of the whole bottom

Start at the bow and work back along the keel, the strakes, and the lower sides. Look for gouges, scrapes, chips, and any cracks that radiate out from an impact point. Raking light from the side throws shadows into cracks that a straight-on look misses.

2. Run a bare hand over every suspect area

Your fingertips catch things your eyes skip right over. Feel for raised edges, a lip where the gel coat has lifted, or a rough, fibrous texture that means the damage reached the fiberglass. A crack you can snag with a fingernail is deeper than a scuff you can only see.

3. Look and feel for weeping or moisture

A hull that took on water through a breach will often weep for hours after haul-out. Watch cracks and gouges for beads of water, a darker damp halo in the fiberglass, or a spot that stays wet while everything around it dries off.

4. Check the bilge and test for flex

Open the bilge and look for water that should not be there. Then press firmly around the impact area and near the transom and stringers. Solid glass feels stiff and quiet. If a section flexes, oil-cans, or gives back a dull thud, the structure underneath may be compromised.

When should you stop using the boat and get a professional inspection?

A shallow gel coat scuff with no cracking is usually safe to run while you schedule a repair. Stop if you find cracks that reach the fiberglass, any weeping or moisture, a soft or flexing spot, water in the bilge that was not there before, or cracks near the transom and stringers.
