Freeze Damage and Water Ingress: Why Even Small Hull Cracks Cannot Wait Through a Colorado Winter

That little star crack near the rub rail, or the chip you picked up loading the boat onto the trailer bunk, looks harmless. All summer, it mostly is. Head into a Colorado winter with it, though, and the story changes. Water that finds its way into the laminate does not sit and wait. It freezes, it expands, and it starts prying your hull apart from the inside.

This guide walks through how a hairline crack turns into real structural damage over a Front Range winter, where the water gets in, and why closing a small breach in the fall costs far less than a spring rebuild. How does a small hull crack turn into major winter damage?

A fiberglass hull is a laminate: layers of glass cloth and resin bonded into one stiff shell, often over a foam or balsa core. Its strength comes from those layers working as a single piece, and water is the enemy of that bond. Once a crack or chip breaks the gel coat — the waterproof outer skin — moisture wicks into the glass and the core behind it.

Winter is what changes the equation. Water expands by roughly nine percent when it freezes, and trapped inside a hairline crack or a soaked core, that expansion works like a slow wedge. Every freeze pushes the layers apart a little more. Every thaw lets water seep a little deeper. Repeat that cycle all winter and a cosmetic crack becomes a growing one. The end stage is delamination — the layers separate, the hull loses its stiffness, and the coring turns soft and saturated. At that point you are into full fiberglass restoration to rebuild the affected structure.

Where does water actually sneak into a fiberglass hull?

  • Gel coat cracks: stress, star, and spider cracks can look shallow yet still reach the glass beneath. A quality gel coat repair closes them before winter.
  • Chips and gouges: trailer bunks, boat ramps, and dock bumps knock chips out of the gel coat and leave bare laminate exposed to moisture.
  • Drain plug and bilge area: a worn or missing drain plug gasket lets water pool and refreeze right where the hull already takes a lot of stress.
  • Transducer and hardware screw holes: every screw holding a cleat, ladder, rail, or transducer becomes a path inside once the old sealant shrinks or cracks.
  • Unsealed fittings and seams: thru-hull fittings, rub rail seams, and the deck-to-hull joint can weep once their bedding compound gets old and brittle.

How hard is the freeze-thaw cycle on the Front Range?

Denver gets plenty of sun, even in January. A stored hull can warm above freezing in the afternoon and drop well below it after dark. That daily rise and fall means water in the laminate can freeze and thaw several times in a single week. Every cycle is another turn of the wedge.

Stored does not mean protected

Shrink wrap and a storage lot keep snow off the deck, but they do not pull moisture back out of the laminate. If water got in before you covered the boat, wrapping it just locks the problem inside for the season. Sealing the crack first is what protects the hull, not the cover over it.

How should you prep a small crack before winter storage?

1. Get cracks looked at before you cover the boat

Walk the hull in good light and mark anything that catches a fingernail, runs in a line, or sits near hardware and high-load areas. A good repair-and-restoration shop can tell you quickly which marks are cosmetic and which reach the laminate.

2. Seal the breach, do not just cover it

Covering a boat keeps the snow off, but it does nothing for water already sitting in a crack. Have the gel coat crack or chip sealed, and the laminate repaired where needed, before the boat ever goes into storage.

3. Store the hull dry and well supported

Pull the drain plug so any water runs out instead of pooling and refreezing in the bilge. Let the hull dry out fully before you wrap it, and support it so no weight rests on a cracked area.

What are the warning signs water is already in the laminate?

  • Soft or spongy spots: a deck, floor, or transom that flexes or feels soft underfoot often means saturated, weakened coring beneath the glass.
  • A dull, hollow sound: a sound hull answers a tap with a sharp, solid tone. A dull or hollow thud can signal delamination.
  • Spreading or weeping cracks: a crack that has grown longer, branched, or shows staining has been moving water all winter.
  • Stains and blisters: brown weeping, bubbling, or blisters in the gel coat point to moisture trapped under the surface.
  • A heavier boat: a hull that feels noticeably heavier or sits lower on the trailer can be holding water in a soaked core.
